Ontario Fury Game Day Notes
January 10, 2014 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL)
Ontario Fury News Release
The ONTARIO FURY starts a two-game, two-night trip through Northern California with a matchup with the Turlock Express at Turlock Indoor Soccer. The Fury (3-6) and Express (2-7) are fighting for their playoff lives in the competitive Pacific Division race. The game will be broadcast on the America One Sports network, and there will be a watch party at Dave and Buster's Ontario Mills.
ABOUT THE FURY
LAST GAME: Beat Toros Mexico, 12-5 at Citizens Business Bank Arena
NEXT GAME: at Bay Area Rosal, 8 p.m. at Cabarnet Indoor Soccer
LAST ACTION: The Ontario Fury got hat tricks from Tino Nunez and Zach Bautista as they snapped a six-game PASL losing streak by defeating Toros Mexico at home. It was the Fury's first victory since an United States Arena Soccer Open Cup victory over the San Diego Sockers Premier team.
Besides the three goals, Nunez added two assists in the game, to stretch his team lead in goals (11) and points (15). Also posting multiple point games were Tiguinho (four assists), Jhonatan Bravo (goal, two assists) and Bernie Lilavois (goal, assist).
GOING FIRST: The victory over Toros Mexico also snapped another streak for the Fury - it was the first time in their past seven appearances to score the first goal of the game. Luis Piffer's first quarter goal gave Ontario its first early lead since it beat Sacramento in the second game of the season. Ontario was 1-6 in the games that they failed to score first, with the win coming against Sockers Premier.
NORTHERN BOUND: This is the Fury's first road trip north of the season, as its previous trips have taken it south from its Inland Empire base. Friday's game also marks only the second road game in the United States, having played three of its previous four road games in Mexico (at Mexico, at Monterrey, at Saltillo). The only other road game the Fury has played was in San Diego.
FURY IRON MEN: Because of injuries and visa travel issues, only two regular players have appeared in all of the Fury's appearances this season - including preseason and US Arena Soccer Open Cup games. Forward Mikel Palmerin and defender Jeff Bader have taken advantage of the playing time, ranking second and fourth, respectively, on the team in points. Bader is second on the team in goals, with eight, while Palmerin is third with seven. The two players' appearances also trump coach Bernie Lilavois, who missed one game due to a suspension.
CLOSE TO HOME: Fury goalkeeper Sanaldo bounced back from his worst outing of the season (a 13-6 loss to San Diego) by giving up only five goals against Mexico (his season low is one against Sacramento). This weekend's trip will give him the chance to impress family and friends, as he makes his offseason home in the Sacramento area, where he conducts camps over the summer.
NEW GUY MAKES AN IMPRESSION: The Fury's most recent pro signing, Jay Lee Harris, has already made his presence known on the field. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound defender has been a force on both ends of the field, having scored twice - his goal against Mexico was the game-winner - and on defense, where he's been credited with two
POWER PLAY PLUS: Another factor working in the Fury's favor against Mexico was its power play, which was perfect in two opportunities. The two-goal outburst raised the Fury's power play conversion rate five points, to 28 percent on the season.
