GARY, Ind. (October 30, 2002) – Oliver Miller, a veteran of eight NBA seasons, has agreed to terms to play for the Gary Steelheads.

Miller, who averaged 16.1 points and 15.1 rebounds in eight games for the Steelheads last season, was the last player cut from the Indiana Pacers' roster.

"I'll go to Gary and play in the CBA and then try and get picked up later," Miller told the Indianapolis Star. "I just have to keep working hard and keep doing what I've been doing and things will work out fine."

Pacers' Coach Isiah Thomas liked the way Miller worked in camp.

"He's not only a big man, but an exceptional player," Thomas said. "You can be a big man and still be a good athlete.

"In basketball, the stereotype comes when you expect a player to look a certain way. I don't buy into those stereotypes or prejudices; I look at the basketball player."

The 6-foot-9 Miller was a fan favorite at the Genesis Center.

"We wanted Oliver to make it with the Pacers, but we are also glad he chose to come back and play for the Steelheads," Steelheads' Head Coach Duane Ticknor said. "I think he will get another chance to get to the NBA."

The Steelheads open veterans' camp Thursday. They open the season on Saturday, November 16 when they host the Sioux Falls Skyforce at the Genesis Convention Center at 7 p.m.
