Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry News Release
LAWTON, OKLA.-- The Oklahoma Cavalry professional CBA basketball team is joining in on the Cops and Kids Picnic festivities Saturday, September 15 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Elmer Thomas Park in Lawton, Okla.
The Cops and Kids Picnic is a yearly event sponsored by the Lawton Police Department. The picnic allows kids to interact with local police officers and come to know them as their friend and protector rather than their enemy.
Officer Charles Whittington said he is happy the team is taking part in this event and is expecting more than 3,000 kids and their families to attend this year's picnic.
"We hold this event every year, and each year it gets bigger and bigger," Officer Whittington said. "We want to show the kids that we, as policeman, are approachable, and they don't have to be afraid to come and talk to the police. This picnic is about bridging the gap between ourselves and the kids."
An Oklahoma Cavalry booth will be set up, and everyone is welcome to stop by to receive information on the team and reserve season tickets for the 2007-2008 inaugural season.
Kids, along with their families, will be able to enjoy a basketball and football toss, moon bounce, games, prizes, face-painting and many more fun-filled activities throughout the day. Officers will be giving free police car rides, and free hamburgers and hot dogs will be available as well.
Everyone in the Lawton area is encouraged to come out and enjoy this fun, family-oriented event.
