Mississippi RiverKings News Release
TULSA, OK - The two-time defending CHL champion Memphis RiverKings ran into a buzzsaw Friday night at the Tulsa Convention Center, losing 8-4 before an announced crowd of 5,468.
Oilers forward Todd Marcellus netted a hat trick for the Oilers, scoring twice in the third period to help seal the victory for Tulsa. It was the Oilers' first win in their last 13 games, with the team having gone 0-10-3 in that stretch.
The game started off poorly for the RiverKings, who saw Tulsa lay claim to a quick 3-0 lead in the first fourteen minutes of the contest. Goals by Marcellus, forward Dan Gravelle, and recently-acquired forward Cam Kuzyk left the RiverKings looking for answers.
Memphis was able to put two goals on the board in the second period, including a marker by forward Brad Mueller, who played in his first game since the beginning of January after spending weeks on the injured reserve. But Tulsa countered with three more goals of their own, including two by forward Chris Page.
Memphis goaltender Mike Minard, playing in his seventh straight game, stopped 16 of 21 shots in the loss. Minard was pulled in favor of goaltender Jean-Francois Racine, who stopped 15 of 18 shots.
The loss dropped the RiverKings to 26-18-3, still in second place in the Northeast Division with 55 points. Memphis will have a chance to gain ground in the division tomorrow night, as they travel to Bossier City to take on the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. Gametime is set for 7:05 pm CST.
