OHL Announces Top Performers for March

Toronto, ON - The Ontario Hockey League today announced the OHL Performers of the Month for March 2008.

OHL Player of the Month - Steven Stamkos, Sarnia Sting

Stamkos was named the OHL's top player for the second consecutive month after scoring 18 goals and six assists for 24 points in 14 games. Stamkos also maintained a plus-14 plus-minus rating and was named the first star seven times in March. After scoring nine goals and six assists in seven games to close out the regular season, Stamkos scored nine times in Sarnia's first round playoff win over the Windsor Spitfires, including a four-goal effort in Game 4 on March 25. The 18-year-old from Unionville, ON finished the regular season fifth in the OHL scoring race with 58 goals and 47 assists for 105 points in 61 games. He is the top rated prospect for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

OHL Goaltender of the Month - Mike Murphy, Belleville Bulls

Murphy compiled a 9-1 record to go along with a 2.02 goals against average and .928 save percentage in 10 starts last month. He finished the regular season with five wins in March and then went 4-1 in the Bulls' opening round playoff win over the Peterborough Petes. Murphy, a 19-year-old from Inverary, ON, allowed two or fewer goals on six occasions last month, including a 21-save shutout against the Ottawa 67's on March 5. He finished the regular season with an OHL best 2.24 goals against average and .929 save percentage to go along with a 36-7-3-1 record and three shutouts.

OHL Rookie of the Month - Taylor Hall, Windsor Spitfires

Hall was the top scorer in the OHL last month with 14 goals and 12 assists for 26 points to go along with a plus-3 plus-minus rating in 13 games. He had seven multiple point games in the final month of the regular season, including a four point game (two goals, two assists) against Oshawa on March 4 and a five pointer (four goals, one assist) against Sault Ste. Marie on March 6. The 17-year-old native of Kingston enjoyed a 12 game point scoring streak and an 11 game goal scoring streak that both ended in March. Hall, the second overall pick in the OHL Priority Selection last May, finished the regular season among the top 20 OHL scorers with 45 goals and 39 assists for 84 points in 63 games.

OHL Defenceman of the Month - Alex Pietrangelo, Niagara IceDogs

Pietrangelo was the OHL's top scoring defenceman during the month of March with five goals and 13 assists for 18 points to go along with a plus-10 plus-minus rating in 10 games. He finished his sophomore season with a goal and 10 points in the final six games of the regular season and then scored four goals and eight points in the IceDogs' four game sweep of the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors in the opening round of the OHL playoffs. He enjoyed a four point game (one goal, three assists) against the Erie Otters on March 2 and had his first multi-goal playoff game against the Majors on March 21. The 18-year-old from King City, ON finished the regular season with 13 goals and 40 assists for 53 points in 60 games.
