The 2008-09 OHL Regular Season is entering the final two days with teams still battling for contention while others fight for positioning and home ice in the standings.
Eastern Conference: (Teams bolded are in their final ranking)
1. Belleville Bulls - 96 points, one game remaining Saturday in Barrie. The Bulls beat the Sudbury Wolves 5-2 Friday night and need at least one point on Saturday OR a Brampton Battalion loss on Sunday to secure first place in the Conference.
2. Brampton Battalion - 94 points, one game remaining Sunday at home against Oshawa. The Battalion beat the Barrie Colts 3-2 on Friday night. They can still capture first place with a win Sunday and a Bulls regulation loss on Saturday.
3. Ottawa 67's - 85 points, one game remaining at home against Kingston on Sunday. The 67's beat the Peterborough Petes 3-2 on Friday night. They have clinched third place and cannot move any higher or lower in the standings and as a result will play the Niagara IceDogs in the first round of the playoffs.
4. Mississauga St. Michael's Majors - 79 points, one game remaining at home against Sudbury on Sunday. The Majors beat the Niagara IceDogs 2-1 in overtime on Friday night. They have clinched fourth place and cannot move any higher or lower in the standings. As a result, the Majors will play the Barrie Colts in the first round of the playoffs.
5. Barrie Colts - 65 points, one game remaining at home against Belleville on Saturday. The Colts lost to the Brampton Battalion 3-2 on Friday night. They have clinched fifth place and cannot move any higher or lower in the standings. As a result, the Colts will play the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors in the first round of the playoffs.
6. Niagara IceDogs - 63 points, one game remaining at home against the Sudbury Wolves on Saturday. The IceDogs lost to the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors 2-1 in overtime on Friday night. They will remain as the sixth seed and as a result will play the Ottawa 67's in the first round of the playoffs.
7. Peterborough Petes - 59 points, no games left. The Petes lost to the Ottawa 67's 3-2 on Friday night. They still have not clinched a playoff spot but with Oshawa and Sudbury both losing Friday night, the Petes have guaranteed themselves at least a tie-breaker game. This would occur only if both Oshawa and Sudbury win all of their remaining games, if not then the Petes clinch a playoff position.
8. Oshawa Generals - 57 points, one game remaining in Brampton on Sunday. The Gens lost 6-3 to the Kingston Frontenacs on Friday night. Although they cannot clinch a playoff spot with a win in their final game, at this point, a win would guarantee them at least a tie-breaker game.
9. Sudbury Wolves - 56 points, two games remaining Saturday in Niagara and Sunday in Mississauga. The Wolves lost to the Bulls 5-2 on Friday night. The Wolves can still clinch a playoff spot with two wins. A tie-breaker game is still possible as well depending on the outcome of their final two games and Oshawa's last game. For a complete breakdown of the tie-breaker rules please click here.
If a tie-breaker game for the last playoff position is necessary, the home team will be determined by using the tie-breaker rules. The only scenario for a tie for the final playoff position would be a tie between Oshawa and Sudbury (if all three teams are tied at 59 points, Peterborough would gain seventh place by virtue of most wins). Thus, the home team is determined by through the tie-breaker rules.
Western Conference: (Teams bolded are in their final ranking)
1. Windsor Spitfires - 115 points, one game remaining Saturday in Owen Sound. The Spits lost 5-2 to the Kitchener Rangers on Friday night. The Spits have secured first place in the Western Conference and as a result will play the Owen Sound Attack in the first round of the playoffs.
2. London Knights - 99 points, one game remaining in Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday. The Knights beat the Saginaw Spirit 3-0 on Friday night. The Knights have secured second place and as a result will play the Erie Otters in the first round of the playoffs.
3. Saginaw Spirit - 79 points, one game remaining Saturday at home against Sarnia. The Spirit lost 3-0 Friday night to the London Knights. The Spirit need just a single point to clinch third place, otherwise they could find themselves in a tie-break scenario.
4. Plymouth Whalers - 77 points, one game remaining Sunday at home against Sarnia. The Whalers beat the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 6-3 Friday night. They can still finish as low as sixth but can clinch home-ice advantage with a win in their final game or end up in a tie-break scenario.
5. Guelph Storm - 77 points, one game remaining Sunday in Erie. The Storm beat the Erie Otters 6-5 in a shootout on Friday night. They can still finish as low as sixth but at this point it appears they need at least a single point for a chance at a tie-break scenario for home-ice advantage.
6. Sarnia Sting - 75 points, two games remaining Saturday in Saginaw and Sunday in Plymouth. The Sting beat the Owen Sound Attack 3-2 in a shootout Friday night. They need to win both of their games for a chance at a tie-break scenario for home-ice advantage.
7. Erie Otters - 69 points, one game remaining Sunday at home against Guelph. The Otters lost 6-5 in a shootout Friday night to the Guelph Storm. They are locked in seventh place and as a result will play the London Knights in the first round of the playoffs.
8. Owen Sound Attack - 65 points, one game remaining Saturday at home to the Windsor Spitfires. The Attack lost Friday night 3-2 in a shootout against the Sarnia Sting. They will remain in eighth and a result will play the Windsor Spitfires in the first round of the playoffs.
