
OHL announces honorary captains

Toronto - The Sarnia Sting and the Oshawa Generals, in collaboration with the CHL and the OHL, announced their honorary captains of the 2006 ADT Canada-Russia Challenge.
Pat Verbeek a native of Sarnia has been named the honourary Captain for the first OHL game of the series to be played in Sarnia on Thursday night. Verbeek played two seasons in the OHL with the Sudbury Wolves winning the Emms Family Award as the OHL Rookie of the Year in 1981-82. He was also a member of the team Canada at the 1983 World Junior Championships. Following his time in the OHL Verbeek went on to a very successful NHL career scoring over 500 goals and recording over 1,000 points in 20 seasons. He was named an NHL All-Star in 1991 and 1996.
Joe Cirella who was a star on the blueline for the Oshawa Generals for parts of three seasons from 1980 to 1983 has been named the Honorary Captain of Team OHL for the second Ontario game of the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge, which will be held at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa on Monday November 27. Cirella was the fifth overall pick in the 1981 NHL Draft, selected by the Colorado Rockies. He carved out an impressive 15-year NHL career with stops in Colorado, New Jersey, Quebec, with the New York Rangers, Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators. Following his playing career he served as an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers for the 1997-98 season and was an assistant coach with the Generals for five seasons, from 1998-2004.
The ADT Canada-Russia Challenge will play a very important role in the selection process of Canada's World Junior Hockey Championship roster as well as the Under-18 roster. Both games will be televised nation-wide on Rogers Sportsnet. The game played in Oshawa will also be broadcast by the Fan Radio Network on www.chl.ca.
