Chesapeake Bayhawks News Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Chesapeake Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) further strengthened their offense with attackman Grant Kaleikau (Delaware '12) as their first pick, 16th overall, in the 2013 MLL Supplemental Draft. Unlike most teams in the league, the Bayhawks acquired an offensively heavy total of 15 players during the draft, which was conducted by the MLL general managers and coaches via conference call.

Kaleikau, a Germantown, MD native, was selected by Bayhawks with the 27th overall pick in the 2012 Collegiate Draft but was not protected at the end of the 2012 MLL season. During his career as an attackman at the University of Delaware, Kaleikau registered 58 goals and 91 assists for 149 points. He was also Delaware's career leader in assists and led the Blue Hens to a CAA title. A two-time All-CAA selection and Tewaarton candidate, Kaleikau was named to the CAA All-Rookie team and will add depth to the already strong attack unit at Chesapeake.

"First of all, I'm excited and looking forward to rejoining the Bayhawks for the upcoming season," Kaleikau stated. "As for being the organizations first pick, it is quite an honor. When you look at some of the names in the draft and especially the players who the Bayhawks selected, I'm proud to know that I showed Coach Cottle enough last summer to re-select me with the first pick. I'll continue to work hard this off-season and hopefully get the opportunity to help the team win games this summer."

With the 24th overall pick, the Bayhawks selected another Delaware standout, midfielder Brett Manney (Delaware "˜08). Manney played three games for Chesapeake in 2011 totaling in 5 ground balls. He is currently playing National League Lacrosse (NLL) for the Philadelphia Wings.

Legendary attackman Casey Powell (Syracuse '98) was selected with the 32nd pick overall. Powell is one of the most decorated players in NCAA and MLL history. In 1998 Powell was chosen as the Turnbull winner as Nation's Top Attack Player for Division 1, and also won the Enners Award in both 1997 and 1998 as the Outstanding Player in Division 1. Powell was also awarded the McLaughlin Trophy in 1996 as the Nation's Top Midfielder. He holds the all time leading scoring record in MLL history, has three MLL Championships under his belt, was a two-time Offensive Player of the Year, and was an All-Star four times in his career.

One of the few defensive picks by Chesapeake came with the 35th overall selection of Mark Staines (UNC '12). Staines was drafted 32nd overall in the 2012 Collegiate Draft by the Boston Cannons and while the rookie did not play for the Cannons, he was the number one long stick defensive midfielder for the Tar Heels and a three-time letter winner.

With the 36th overall pick, the Bayhawks drafted Jamie Lincoln (Hofstra "˜11). An Ontario Canada native, Lincoln played in 17 games for the Colorado Mammoth NLL team in 2012 tallying 27 goals and 20 assists for 47 points.

Immediately after with the 39th pick overall, Chesapeake selected their first of two goalies, Bruce Bickford (Drexel '08). Goalie Joe Marra (Fairfield "˜10) was then drafted with the 57th overall pick. Bickford spent two seasons on the Boston Cannon's practice squad and played in one game last season with three saves. Marra played four games for the Hamilton Nationals in 2011 and was then drafted to the Charlotte Hounds in the 2012 Expansion Draft. He played 5 games for the Hounds boasting 43 saves for a .566 save percentage.

With the 47th and 48th picks, the Bayhawks selected midfielder Tony Mendes and attackman Dan Hardy respectively. For the Bayhawks 56th pick, head coach Dave Cottle drafted midfielder Chris Schiller (PSU '99) and immediately after traded Schiller to the Hounds in exchange for their 7th round pick in the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft.

The Bayhawks claimed attackman Neal Hicks (Notre Dame '10) with the 64th pick. Hicks was a member of the Bayhawks practice squad in 2012 and was originally picked up by Chesapeake in the 2011 Supplemental Draft. Midfielder Zach Angel (Georgetown '12) was drafted wwith the 72nd pick and midfielder Josh Simms (Princeton '00) with the 80th pick. Simms played for the Bayhawks from 2001-2005 and was 7th all time in total points and 8th all time in goals for the Bayhawks franchise.

To conclude the draft, Chesapeake selected face-off specialist JP Dalton (Loyola '12) and midfielder Chris Hunt with the 88th and 96th picks respectively. Dalton was a member of the 2012 NCAA Championship Greyhounds team and Hunt played for the Bayhawks in 2012.
