Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY- For the second time this week the Hudson Valley Renegades were shut out on two hits as the Vermont Lake Monsters won the first game of a three-game series at Dutchess Stadium 2-0 Thursday night. Despite going 3-2 through the first five games of their homestand, the Renegades have only scored in seven of 49 innings played.

Hudson Valley ' s best chance to score came in the second when they recorded their only two hits. Righfielder Oscar Rojas led off the inning with a lined single to left, however he was erased on a strike out-throw out double play with designated hitter Rafelin Lorenzo. With two out and nobody on base, leftfielder Isaac Benard drew a walk and third baseman reached base on an infield single to short to put runners at first and second. Shortstop Deion Tansel came up next, but he flew out to rightfield to end the threat.

After six innings of scoreless baseball, the Lake Monsters finally broke through in the seventh. With reliever Andrew Gist on the hill for Hudson Valley Vermont shortstop Jesus Lage started the rally with a hit by pitch. After getting a strikeout of second baseman Javier Godard for out number two, it appeared Gist would get out of the inning. However, with the count at 3-2 and Lage running from first, catcher Lana Akau grounded a single to center. Lake Monsters third base coach and manager Aaron Nieckula rolled the dice and waved Lage to the plate. The throw home from Renegades shortstop Deion Tansel was high and up the line allowing Lage to score and give the Lake Monsters a 1-0 lead.

With runners at first and second with two away, Vermont third baseman Will Toffey drew a walk to keep the inning alive. Leftfielder James Terrell followed and laced a ground-rule double to right-centerfield to score Lage and up Vermont ' s lead to 2-0.

That was all the Lake Monsters would need as their pitchers set down 19 straight Renegades from two-out in the second inning until the beginning of the ninth. In the ninth, Renegades second baseman Vidal Brujan drew a leadoff walk to break the streak, however he was erased on a 5-4-3 double play from centerfielder Carl Chester. After first baseman Brendan McKay was hit with a pitch to keep the game alive, catcher Zac Law flew out to left to end the game.

Vermont had eight hits including two singles apiece from Toffey, centerfielder Logan Farrar, and first baseman Aaron Arruda.

Getting the win for the Lake Monsters was reliever Brian Howard (2-1) who came on in the fourth inning and retired all nine men he faced while striking out two. Gist (3-1) suffered the loss after allowing both earned runs on three hits in two innings. He also struck out three. Reliever Jeferson Mejia notched his first save of the season as he recorded the final out after entering with two out and McKay at first in the ninth.

Both starters started the scoreless affair with strong performances. Tobias Myers went five innings and allowed five hits with a walk and seven strikeouts for the Renegades. Renegades pitchers recorded 14 strikeouts for the game. Lake Monsters starter Parker Dunshee upped his scoreless innings streak to 38.1. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out three in three innings.

Hudson Valley and Vermont will square off in game two of their three-game series tomorrow at Dutchess Stadim. First-pitch is set for 7:05. On the hill for the Renegades will be right-hander Jhonleider Salinas (3-1, 3.55 ERA). He will be opposed by fellow righty Jean Ruiz (1-0, 1.33 ERA) of the Lake Monsters. There will be fireworks following the game. Tickets can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
