Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Longview-Kelso: July 27, 2011: The Cowlitz Black Bears returned to the field after the All-Star break, three games from a playoff spot with 12 games remaining. The pressure was on, and Braxton Miller (Lewis-Clark St.) delivered on the first pitch.
The starting catcher of the All-Star Game smacked the first pitch of the game to the right field wall. Kyle Garlick (University of Oregon) drove him in with a single and gave the Bears a 1-0 lead after one inning. Greg Velazquez (Cal St. Fullerton) had a two-run single in the fifth to break the game open. Kirk Cunningham (LSU) started the game three-for-three with an RBI and reached in his fourth at-bat on an error by the second baseman.
Matt Maurer (Pepperdine) took the mound for the Black Bears and pitched through the 8th inning. He spun the five Bellingham hits into one run, struck out three and walked one. With runners on first and second in the 9thinning, Ian Ekery (University of Missouri) struck out the side to end it and give the team their second consecutive win - the first time they've won back-to-back games since July 12th and 13th.
Tomorrow is Thirsty Thursday, with $2 beer all night long. It will also be KBAM 1270 AM Country Music Night and Union Night. The finale on Friday will be another Las Rocas Fabulous Friday, and the Gallery of Diamonds Diamond Dig will take place after that contest as the first 200 women will search for one of three diamonds buried on the field.
