Bend Elks News Release
As has been the story in many losses this season, the Elks defense let them down as three costly errors, two of them in the first inning, allowed Walla Walla to take an early lead and used their pitching down the stretch to earn the victory, beating the Elks by a score of 3-1.
In the bottom of the first inning, the inning led off with a ground ball to Ryan Dunn that ended in an error, a single followed to advance the leadoff hitter Denver Chavez to third, an RBI groundout followed by the third hitter Andrew Mendenhall, Zack Wentz was hit by a pitch, then after another single loaded the bases, two runs would score on a fielder's choice to second base, and an error made by Michael Benjamin, making the score 3-0 in the early going.
The Elks managed to get one back in the top of the sixth and had a chance for more, but couldn't capitalize. Donald Collins reached to lead off the inning due to an error by Walla Walla, then Michael Benjamin followed that up with a double into left field. Collins tried scoring from first, but was thrown out at the plate for the first out of the inning. Benjamin would come around to score on a wild pitch, Tyler Christian then hit a double to put a runner on second with one out, but Ryan Dunn lined out to second base and Christian got doubled off to end the threat.
That would be all of the scoring for the night, making Stephen Ostapeck the hard luck loser. Ostapeck threw 5 innings, giving up no earned runs, but was the pitcher of record when the three runs scored in the first.
