OC Flyers Draft Results and Tryout Update

(Fullerton, Ca.) The GBL Champion Orange County Flyers completed one of the biggest weeks of their 5 year history with the signing of 4 players from the Arizona Winter League and inviting 8 players to come to Spring Training from their weekend Tryout Camp.

President/GM Alan Mintz and new manager Phil Nevin are not resting on the laurels of their 2008 Championship. They have been busy actively scouting players, making trades, and watching 86 players go through workouts this past weekend at Northwood High - all looking to hook on with the Flyers.

The week started out with the Flyers obtaining the #1 and #2 draft choices in the talented Arizona Winter League thru a series of trades involving draft picks and veteran players.

With the top choice they first picked left handed slugging outfielder Gregory Najac. Najac, 23, was origionally drafted by the Twins. He was considered to be the best player in the Arizona League and reminded many observers of former Flyer MVP and now Angel property Pat Breen.

Then with the second overall pick, the Flyers selected hard throwing right handed pitcher David Cross. The 24 year old Cross, who played in the American Association, will compete for a starting spot on the Flyers.

The Flyers then drafted two of the best athletes and speedsters in the League. Derek Perren, a 23 year old outfielder from USC was chosen next - followed by Joshua Cox, a 22 year old outfielder from Yale.

After inking those 4 players to contracts, the Flyers then hosted a 2-day Tryout Camp where 86 players attempted to show Manager Nevin and Coaches Dave Bacani, Paul Abbott, and Robert Bafia that they could help the Flyers.

After the two days, the Flyers extended invitations to eight players to come back and join them for Spring Training starting May 9th.

The eight players invited back were:

Dustin Hicks - Catcher Cody Sandzimier - Catcher Jallil Sandoval - Shortstop Taylor Cresswell - Outfielder Shane Brown - Pitcher Joe Leighton - Pitcher Nick Cassanova - Pitcher Joe Muro - Pitcher

NOTE: The Defending GBL Champs open Spring Training May 9th

The Season Opener is May 21st in Tijuana

The Home Opener is June 9th vs. Victoria

Opening Night will be when the 2008 Championship Rings will be given to the players!! Fireworks and a Huge Celebration!!
