January 28, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Oakland Roots News Release
In 2020 the Oakland Roots created the Justice Fund - a charitable fund to support causes at the intersection of race and gender justice. With the support and guidance of our partners at the East Bay Community Foundation, last month we started to make our first grants to local non-profit organizations and we'll be featuring them here as we grow.
Oakland Roots is proud to support the Radical Monarchs, an Oakland-based non-profit which seeks to create opportunities for young girls of color to form fierce sisterhood, celebrate their identities and contribute radically to their communities. We highly recommend you watch this brilliant mini-documentary about their story.
The Radical Monarchs currently have four active Bay Area troops in Oakland, San Francisco and Richmond. They are all in their second year earning their Pachamama Justice, Radical Bodies and Black Lives Matter badges through a series of grounding sessions, interactive activities and community actions.
Oakland Roots was able to support Radical Monarchs with a donation of $10,000 from our Justice Fund at the end of 2020.
"Thank you Oakland Roots for your generous donation! Your organization's investment will help the Radical Monarch movement support young girls and gender-expansive youth of color so that they stay rooted in their brilliance & collective power" - Marilyn Hollinquest. Co-founder / CEO
Now the Monarchs are looking to build on their incredible work in Oakland by going national and reaching even more young girls of color!
They are focusing expansion efforts in Los Angeles, California, South Bronx, New York, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Richmond, California. These cities and regions have been chosen because the Monarchs have been in conversation with community members that are ready to become troop leaders and launch their own troops in these areas.
