NY Lizards Lacrosse Announces 2020 Game Schedule for MLL 20th Anniversary Season

February 19, 2020 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) - New York Lizards News Release

Garden City, NY - The New York Lizards Major League Lacrosse Team announced its 2020 game schedule today with the season openers taking place Saturday May 30, 2020 at 7:00pm when they host the Boston Cannons at Hofstra University's Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, NY.

Major League Lacrosse was born in 2001 with six teams competing for the inaugural Steinfeld Trophy. The New York Lizards were the Long Island Lizards back then and they won that first championship, the first of three in franchise history.

In 2020, the league is celebrating its 20th season and the NY Lizards are one of three franchises that have been part of MLL since the start along with the Boston Cannons and the Chesapeake Bayhawks (formerly Baltimore Bayhawks).

Twenty years after it all started, the Lizards and Major League Lacrosse are set to embark on a special season.

"This is a very exciting season for both the Lizards and the MLL," said Lizards CEO Jeffrey Rudnick. "With the Lizards being one of the original MLL franchises, there is such a great history that we can look back on and at the same time, continue to build upon."

This year, MLL will have six teams competing in a ten-game regular season. There will be two new franchises, the Connecticut Hammerheads and the Philadelphia Barrage, joining the Lizards, Boston Cannons, Denver Outlaws, and the defending champion Chesapeake Bayhawks.

With Philadelphia and Connecticut once again having teams in Major League Lacrosse, the league will now be entrenched in two more terrific lacrosse hotbeds.

"These are two great markets that have shown tremendous growth in the youth lacrosse world since the league last played there," said Rudnick. "It will be tremendous for the youth players in these markets to get the opportunity to see the best players in the world play on a regular basis in their hometowns."

From the Lizards perspective, the objective is simple...duplicate what that first Lizards team did in 2001 and capture a fourth MLL title in 2020, the 20th season of the league.

"The goal is to have a winning season and to bring the championship trophy home," said Lizards Head Coach B.J. O'Hara.

For the second straight season, the Lizards' home opener will feature the Lizards Town Cup. On May 30th at Shuart Stadium, this year's event has been expanded to five PAL youth lacrosse Nassau versus Suffolk championship games featuring the top 4th through 8th grade teams from this year.

The Town Cup is another example of the Lizards' commitment to youth lacrosse in the region.

"In 2019, the Lizards worked hand-in-hand with the Suffolk and Nassau PAL leaders to give something back to the kids that work so hard for their town teams," said Rudnick. "It was such a success last year, that not only are we doing it again, but we are adding another age division to the Town Cup Championship."

In 2020, the Lizards will play four of their five home games at Shuart Stadium on the campus of Hofstra University. The June 20th game against Denver will take place at Farmingdale State College in conjunction with the 12th annual Long Island Lax Fest youth tournament. Last year, more than 300 teams from all over the country participated in Lax Fest and this year the participating players, coaches and families will have the added attraction of having the opportunity to attend the 8:00pm game between the Lizards and Denver Outlaws.

Farmingdale has a smaller seating capacity than Hofstra, but the stage has been set for a unique environment and a terrific atmosphere that evening with lacrosse fans of all ages getting an up close and personal experience watching a Lizards game.

"Lax Fest has been the gold standard for youth tournaments in the tri-state area," said Rudnick. "We are very excited to work with such a great group and to have one of the Lizards home game played at their site. While the Farmingdale State venue is a great facility, the seating is much more limited than we are used to, thus tickets will be in high demand."

The other Lizards home games (all at Hofstra) will be Thursday, July 16th against Connecticut, Saturday, August 1st against Philadelphia and the final game of the regular season Saturday, August 15th against Chesapeake for Military Appreciation Night.

On the road, the Lizards will celebrate the 4th of July in Maryland when they visit Chesapeake, they'll head down the New Jersey Turnpike to Philadelphia to face the Barrage on June 28th and they'll make their first trip to Connecticut to meet the Hammerheads on August 8th.

The NY Lizards complete 2020 regular season schedule is as follows:

Week 2: Saturday June 6th at Denver Outlaws

Week 3: BYE WEEK

"I am honored to be a part of the MLL and to be a part of the 20th season," said Lizards attackman Dylan Molloy. "I am also hoping the Lizards can hold up the championship trophy and always remember this milestone."

The Lizards won the first league championship in 2001 and then two more after that in 2003 and 2015. They'll try to bring things full circle in Major League Lacrosse by capturing the fourth Steinfeld Trophy in franchise history in 2020.
