Las Vegas Locomotives News Release
LAS VEGAS, NV - Wednesday, December 8, 2010 - Las Vegas Locomotives cornerback ISAIAH TRUFANT signed to the New York Jets practice squad on Wednesday. The 5-foot-8, 170-pound defensive back played a starring role in the Locos title defense as they won a second straight UFL championship.
Trufant was the United Football League Defensive Player of the Year 2010. He finished the regular season with four interceptions, more than any player in UFL history and was an integral part of the best defense in the league.
"Isaiah had a tremendous year for us as a starting cornerback and at nickel back," said Locos Defensive and Special Teams Coordinator LARRY MACDUFF. "He made some great plays for us on blitzes, in coverage and against the run. He has great instincts and is an inspiration to his teammates. He is very coachable and we certainly wish him the very best. He definitely deserves the opportunity."
Trufant was with the team in 2009 and returned to the Locos as a 2010 free agent. He recorded 13 tackles and broke up two passes in 2009. In 2010, he wowed fans and coaches with his exciting play. He finished the season with 30 tackles, one sack, four pass breakups and four interceptions.
Trufant had his biggest game in the Locos' 22-10 Week 4 victory over the Omaha Nighthawks, when he picked off Nighthawks quarterback JEFF GARCIA twice. He returned one interception for a touchdown and was named defensive player of the week.
"Isaiah has been one of the most valuable players on our team the last two years," said Locos head coach JIM FASSEL. "I have outstanding respect for him as a person and as a football player. He is a top level competitor who has made many plays for us, including intercepting the pass that set up the game winning field goal in the 2009 Championship game and being the defensive player of the year this season. It was a great move by the New York Jets to pick him up."
Trufant, who was born in Tacoma, WA played college football at Eastern Washington University and has spent time with the Spokane Shock, the Kansas City Brigade and the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League. He is the younger brother of Seattle Seahawks cornerback MARCUS TRUFANT.
