Not so sweet home for Joes

August 19, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release

Anderson returned home Sunday with high hopes of a three-game winning streak and an opportunity to leapfrog the Bradenton Juice in the South Coast League second-half standings.

Instead, the Joes lost, 3-2, to the Juice in front of 602 at Anderson Memorial Stadium, dropping game one of the unconventional series.

For just the third time this year, Anderson (19-18, 32-50 overall) played a Sunday game, all of them going down as losses to Bradenton (20-16, 44-36).

The Joes offense struggled to string rallies together, totaling 10 hits but only scoring twice, once on a Kevin Noles RBI single to drive in Steve Pearson in the fourth inning and then again on Rafael Diaz' first home run of the year, a solo shot he hit in the fifth.

The Juice took an early lead with a Brennan Hererra solo home run in the second inning, then scored two runs to take the lead for good in the fourth inning with two doubles and an RBI single off Joes starter Dallas Mahan.

Mahan lasted seven innings, giving up seven hits and three runs, but took a loss despite striking out four and walking only one. His record is now 2-3.

Bradenton ace Brian Gartley earned his ninth win of the year against just two losses, allowing two runs across eight innings. Wayne Hedden earned his first save of the year for the Juice.

Diaz, Noles, Pearson and Brandon Carter each had two hits for the Joes in the defeat, the third straight series Anderson has lost game one.

Monday, the Joes hope to continue the trend of recovering well to finish series, as Anderson has won seven of the nine series it has played since Kash Beauchamp took over as manager.

First pitch Monday is set for 7:05 p.m.
