San Angelo Saints News Release
SAN ANGELO â The San Angelo Saints added some more size to their roster today with the signing of power forward Scott Mahar. The 6-5, 240 pound left-winger is entering his 2nd pro season after playing last year for the El Paso Buzzards. In his rookie season for the Buzzards, Mahar scored 2 goals and 12 assists while piling up 142 penalty minutes for a team that was in disarray for much of the season and shut down operations at the end of the year.
A native of North Bay, Ontario, Mahar adds toughness and size to the Saints roster, but is not just a stereotypical "tough-guy."
"We don't believe in having one-dimensional players," said Saints head coach Ray Edwards. "Scott is one of the guys who will make his presence felt if needed, but he needs to be more than just a tough guy. We hope that he will develop into someone who can be counted on in other key situations as well."
With the signing of Mahar, the Saints now have 12 players on their roster for the upcoming season. Mahar joins forwards Steve Roberts, Chris Peach, Jarett Metz, Trevor Weisgerber, Jonathan Parker, Brett Cross and Rob Frost and defensemen Corri Moffat, Derek Booth, Konrad Brand and Matt Frick on the Saints' current roster. Several more player signings are expected this week including a couple of rookies and a goaltender. Mahar's career stats are listed below.
The puck drops on the 2nd season of Saints hockey with two exhibition games against Odessa on Oct. 10 (home) and 11 (away). The team's home opener is Oct. 18th against the expansion Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. Season tickets and multi-game ticket and voucher packs are on sale now at the Saints office at 3111 Knickerbocker Road and at the San Angelo Convention Center.
The Saints in the City public service campaign continues this week with Derek Booth, Corri Moffat and Halo the mascot taking part in Chik-Fil-A's kid's fun day at Sunset Mall Tuesday from noon-2 p.m. Halo will also be at the NBC3 food drive to benefit the Concho Valley Regional Food Bank on Saturday. Booth and Moffat will be conducting hockey skills instruction as part of National Kid's Day at the Goodfellow Rec Camp on Sunday afternoon.
And, don't forget to mark your calendars for the Saints' 1st Annual Town Hall Meeting set for August 19th at 7 p.m. at the convention center.
