Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings News Release
Battle Wings owner Dan Newman announced today the hiring of Jon Norris as head coach. Norris comes to the Battle Wings from the Austin Wranglers of the Arena Football League (AFL) where he served as defensive co-coordinator and line coach for three seasons.
Newman said of the hiring, "It was imperative that we find an arena football experienced and successful coach for this position. Jon Norris is just that person."
Prior to the Austin Wranglers, Norris coached with the Dallas Desperados. He was the head coach for the af2 Tulsa Talons their first season in existence, and led the Talons to a winning season and to the playoffs. Newman continued, "I knew we had to find a coach that knew the game, had a winning tradition before coming here, and could attract players to Bossier-Shreveport who are looking for a shot at moving on to the AFL and NFL. Jon Norris's success in Austin, Dallas, and Tulsa sends a message to potential players that coming here means an honest look from coaches at the next level. And the message sent by this hiring goes even further. Coach Norris has committed for two years to head the Battle Wings. Players now know that Jon will be here for the long haul and is committed to help them develop skills to move them up."
Norris takes the reins from John Fourcade who coached the Battle Wings for one season. The injury bug plagued the Wings during 2006 starting in training camp. "Losing your two best offensive players for the season in game one and your best defensive player in game two is a hurdle that we were unable to overcome," said Newman.
The Battle Wings begin their fourth season with Newman as owner. "This team has never been to the playoffs. Under Coach Norris I feel we can offer the fans in Shreveport-Bossier a first time chance to see their team play in the post-season."
When commenting about Norris coming to the Battle Wings, af2 President Jerry Kurz stated, "I am excited that the Battle Wings were able to bring Jon back to af2. It sends a message to players and coaches alike that af2 is a great place to play and coach, and that there is tremendous opportunity that comes from being a part of af2. Jon Norris knows our game, our players, and our coaches, and will bring great things to the community of Bossier-Shreveport."
