Nords Top Bears in a Shootout to Win the Weekend
March 28, 2022 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Maine Nordiques News Release
The Maine Nordiques took on the Maryland Black Bears for the second straight night after falling in a shootout the previous night.
The first period started with some great back and forth action with the Nords and Black Bears looking for the opening goal. It didn't come until the 9:35 marker, but it was off a stick of a Black Bear on a tip from a face-off win to make it 1-0. The Nords got a power play and couldn't convert and we would end the first 4 on 4 and with a 1-0 black bears lead.
The second period has been the Nordiques period as of late and they continued that tonight as they began on a power play but it was unsuccessful. The Nords dumped the puck into the zone and Farrell won a boards battle back to Seth Murch who pinched off the line and sniped one bar down for his first goal in the NAHL. A minute later Caden Pattison would put a rebound home after an Orloff keep and shot at the line to make it 2-1 Nords and give them the lead. The Black Bears would tie with a goal with 5 minutes left in the second to tie it at 2.
The third period saw some physicality and tightly contested ice and neither team was able to find the back of the net. We would need overtime for the second straight night.
In overtime the Nords got off to a good start possessing the puck but would take a penalty. On the penalty kill the Black Bears got off to a good start and thought they found the back of the net, but upon review it was determined that Avery Sturtz was interfered with and the Black Bears who were already in the locker room ready to board the bus back to Maryland had to come back out and play the two minutes that were left of overtime. Their power play came to a close and the Nords got a great chance from Wiberg who couldn't score and Brendan Kimball put one off the post and couldn't convert either. We would need a shootout again.
In the first round Avery Sturtz came up with a great save and Zion Green was denied.
In round two Avery Sturtz denied a chance and Jonny Meiers patiently waited out the goalie and converted to put the pressure on.
In round three the Black Bears needed to score but Avery Sturtz made a huge blocker save and the Nordiques claimed the two points in the shootout!
