No Joke, Gold Kings Back on Track

April 1, 2002 - West Coast Hockey League (WCHL) - Colorado Gold Kings News Release

Colorado Springs, CO - The Colorado Gold Kings snapped the second-worst winless streak in club history with a sweep of the Fresno Falcons over the weekend.

Colorado hit its nadir last Tuesday in a 6-0 loss at Bakersfield but played better in a 4-2 defeat at Fresno the following night. The Falcons followed the Gold Kings back to Colorado Springs for a weekend series and threatened to take Friday's game, leading 4-3 with less than five minutes left in regulation. But Colorado battled back, tying the contest on a slapshot by Craig Lyons and taking its one and only lead of the night on Xavier Majic's power play goal with 18.2 seconds remaining. The Gold Kings held on for a 5-4 victory that ended their eight-game winless skid (0-7-1). Majic and Cody Bowtell scored twice the following night as Colorado rolled to a 6-1 victory behind 38 saves from Kirk Daubenspeck. Zac Boyer added a goal and a playmaker with three assists while R.J. Enga scored his 44th goal of the year and assisted on two others.

The Gold Kings boast three of the league's top six scorers in Boyer (3rd-89 points), Enga (4th-88 points), and Lyons (6th-75 points). Colin Chaulk was recalled by Grand Rapids (AHL) shortly after handing out three assists in Friday's win over Fresno. He scored two goals in an earlier eight-game stint with the Griffins and may or may not be available for Colorado's postseason run.

The Gold Kings (37-26-7) put a lid on their regular season schedule this weekend against the Anchorage Aces (19-42-9) at the Colorado Springs World Arena, beginning with a "$5 Friday" at the special starting time of 7:30 p.m. Any ticket in the upper bowl may be purchased for only five dollars. Sunday night marks the regular season finale and Fan Appreciation Night at 7:30 p.m. As part of the festivities, all fans will have the opportunity to receive autographs from every member of the Gold Kings. Jack Michaels calls the play-by-play for Colorado's games, all of which are broadcast live on KKCS-AM Hot Talk 1460.
