Gold Kings Welcome Back Schmidt

July 19, 2002 - West Coast Hockey League (WCHL) - Colorado Gold Kings News Release

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Colorado Gold Kings have re-signed center Greg Schmidt to a one-year contract for the 2002-03 season.

The 26-year-old Schmidt fought off an assortment of nagging injuries with the Gold Kings last year and managed to finish with 42 points on 15 goals and 27 assists in 61 games. The scrappy North Battleford, Saskatchewan, native also recorded 102 minutes in penalties during his first season in Colorado.

"Even though he was hurt for part of last year, Schmidtty is one of those character guys that's hard to put a price on," said Gold Kings coach Al Pedersen. "He's a valuable member of our team, especially in the locker room."

Schmidt came to Colorado Springs last year after three seasons in South Carolina, where he led the Stingrays to the 2001 ECHL championship with nine goals and nine assists in 18 playoff contests. He had scored 55 goals in his last two seasons with South Carolina prior to joining the Gold Kings. 2002-03 season tickets are now on sale, starting at only $160 for a 10-game package in the lower bowl at the Colorado Springs World Arena.
