Published on August 26, 2019 under Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
Thornhill, Ontario - New Jersey Jackals OF Alfredo Marte and Sussex County Miners RHP Jeff Thompson are the Can-Am League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the week of August 19-25, as selected by PointStreak, the league's official statistician.
It marks the fourth time this season Marte has earned the honor, tying him for the league record for most Batter of the Week selections in a season with Quebec 3B Eddie Lantigua, set in 2005.
In six games, Marte went 10-for-20 (.500) with three home runs, nine RBI and seven runs scored as the Jackals went 3-3. In the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday against Rockland, the native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, blasted two homers and drove in five of his team's six runs in an 11-6 defeat. He also had two hits in three other games on the week.
The 30-year-old leads the Can-Am League with 16 home runs, 86 RBI, 176 total bases and 43 extra-base hits, and is tied for the league lead with 27 doubles.
Marte is in his first season with the Jackals and his 14th season as a professional, having played in the Arizona, Los Angeles Angels, Baltimore and Philadelphia organizations. He spent parts of three seasons in the majors, appearing in 71 games with the Angels (2013-14) and the Diamondbacks (2015).
Thompson had a pair of strong outings on the week, starting Tuesday when he earned the victory over Trois-Rivières, giving up two runs on four hits in 6.2 innings while striking out eight. He followed up with an outstanding complete-game performance over Quebec on Saturday, allowing a run on five hits with seven Ks in a 10-1 Miners win.
In his first season in the Can-Am League, the Louisville, Ky., native leads the circuit with ten wins and is third with 109.1 innings pitched to go along with a 3.70 ERA for first-place Sussex County.
2019 marks Thompson's eighth professional season. After spending six years in the Detroit Tigers' system, reaching as high as Double-A, he pitched in the Frontier League in 2018. He was a third-round choice of the Tigers in the 2013 draft out of the University of Louisville.
