Schaumburg Flyers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - Two runs in the top of the ninth ensured Dustin Glant's stellar start didn't go to waste, as the Schaumburg Flyers came from behind to beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at CanWest Park.
Schaumburg got eight strong innings from Glant (8-8), who allowed only five hits and two runs while walking two and striking out one. He retired 20 of the last 24 batters he faced, including eight in a row at one point.
The Goldeyes struck first in the bottom of the second. Vince Harrison continued to plague his former team with a solo home run to lead off the inning, and Kevin West followed with a walk. Dee Brown then singled West home for an early 2-0 lead.
Answering right back next inning, the Flyers manufactured a run in the third off of Winnipeg starter Andrew Cruse. Tony Mansolino led off with a single, stole second, then scored on Antoan Richardson's RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The score remained the same until the ninth. Winnipeg closer Chris Homer came on and gave up a lead off single to Felix Jose. TJ Wilson entered the game as a pinch runner for Jose, and stole second base on the second pitch to Lyndon Poole. The throw down to second from catcher Brent Matheny bounced off of the pitcher Homer, and Homer had to exit the game in favor of Mark Michael.
Poole singled home Wilson to tie the game at 2-2. He was erased on Dunbar's double play, but the Flyers comeback wasn't over. Back-to-back doubles, including the game winner by Joe Pauley, gave Schaumburg a 3-2 advantage.
Cephas Howard (6) worked a scoreless ninth for the save. Michael (3-6) would take the loss, the fifth pitcher used in the game by manager Rick Forney.
The regular season comes to a close tomorrow night, as the Flyers try to enter the offseason on a good note. They send RHP Tom Lyons (2-5, 5.44) to the mound looking for a series win against RHP Ace Walker (11-6, 3.41). First pitch is set for 7:00.
