Omaha Nighthawks News Release
JACKSONVILLE, FL - Tuesday, February 1 2011 - Omaha Nighthawks head coach JOE MOGLIA has recruited PETE KUHARCHEK as the United Football League team's defensive backs coach.
Kuharchek has more than 40 years of coaching experience and has coached in six World Bowl championships, winning two, during ten seasons as both an assistant coach and head coach with the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe. In 2009 he was the defensive coordinator of the Toronto Argonauts and served as a defensive coach in a variety of capacities at the college level.
"I am extremely pleased and looking forward to joining Joe Moglia and Tom Olivadotti at the Omaha Nighthawks," said Kuharchek. "I have kept an eye on the UFL the past two years and know there is a high quality of football being played. That high quality will only continue to get better and I am excited to be a part of it. I am also looking forward to coaching for the great Omaha football fans."
Kuharchek earned a reputation as one of the best defensive coaches in NFLE history during his decade-long stay (1996-2005). His early success as defensive coordinator (1996-2000), which saw his units finish among the top two in most statistical categories, resulted in a promotion to Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator in 2000. He held the position for five seasons and led his team to two World Bowl berths.
Kuharchek was linebackers coach at Louisiana Tech from 2006-07 and prior to moving to Europe, was a defensive coordinator at Texas El Paso (1993-95), Orlando Thunder of the World League (1992), Memphis State University (1986-89), and Eastern Tennessee State University (1981-82). He was an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Bandits (1983-85) of the USFL, coached two years at Wisconsin-Eau Claire (1977-78) and won the 1976 Peach Bowl as a defensive coach at the University of Kentucky.
Kuharchek's resume also includes coaching positions at Holy Cross College (1979-80), Tampa Catholic High School (1972-75), and his alma mater, University of Tampa.
"Pete has a wealth of experience as a head coach and defensive coordinator and will be a fine addition to the defensive side of our staff," said Nighthawks head coach Joe Moglia. "From his time in NFL Europe, where he was extremely successful, he helped players develop and continue their careers while also winning games."
