Omaha Nighthawks News Release
Omaha, NE - General Manager Rick Mueller announced several changes to the roster this week.
With Nighthawks QB Eric Crouch being placed on injured reserve in Week 2, quarterback D.J. Shockley returns to the team. He was a member of the 2010 Nighthawks squad before being placed on injured reserve due to a pectoral injury. Schockley opened the 2011 UFL season on the Nighthawks roster before being released and signing with the Sacramento Mountain Lions. During training camp the Mountain Lions released him. Shockley was a standout at the University of Georgia and was drafted in the seventh round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.
Wide receiver Sam Aiken was a 2003 fourth round NFL draft pick by the Buffalo Bills. Aiken played college ball at North Carolina. He is an eight year NFL veteran where he spent time with the Bills, New England Patriots, and Cleveland Browns.
Running back Garrett Wolfe was selected by the Chicago Bears in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft. Wolfe was a standout at Northern Illinois before joining the Bears, where he spent four seasons. He joins an already strong backfield anchored by starter Shaud Williams.
Linebacker Matt Wenger was signed to the Nighthawks active roster this week. Wenger's path to the UFL is one that defines what the league stands for giving players from small schools a chance who would otherwise slip the cracks. Wenger played college football for the North Central College Cardinals. During the 2010 UFL off season, Wenger attended a tryout for the Omaha Nighthawks and took part in training camp, but was released before the regular season started. With linebacker Patrick Thomas being placed on injured reserve, a roster spot opened and the Nighthawks signed Wenger back to the active roster.
"We feel that we have made some solid changes to our roster," states Mueller. "We expect each of them to make an impact on the field when we play the Sacramento Mountain Lions this Saturday."
The Omaha Nighthawks travel to Sacramento to face the Mountain Lions on Saturday evening with a 6pm CST kickoff. Fans can tune into 1620am The Zone to catch all the action, as well as watch a live stream of the game at www.veetle.com/ufl
