Nighthawks Defeat Muskrats at Home

June 13, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) - Upper Valley Nighthawks News Release

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. - Anthony Quirion (Lamar University) was 3-for-3 and the Upper Valley offense remained red hot, as the Nighthawks defeated the Winnipesaukee Muskrats by a score of 8-2 on Wednesday night at Maxfield Sports Complex.

It did not take long for the Nighthawks offense to start producing, as the Nighthawks pieced together two runs on three hits in the home-half of the first inning. Alvin Melendez (Fordham University) led off with a single and scored on a double-steal, before Davis Mikell (Castleton University) ripped an RBI knock to centerfield and drive in Quirion from third base.

In the bottom of the second frame, Melendez drove in Ross Cadena (Wichita State University) from third to put the Nighthawks up 3-0.

The bats did not cool down in the 3rd inning either, as Quirion led off the inning with a single to left field before coming around to score on an Anthony Meduri (Binghamton University) sacrifice fly.

Quirion's bat continued to smoke, as an RBI double in the 6th inning increased the Nighthawks lead to 6-0 over their Northern Division opponent.

The Nighthawks continued to take advantage of WInnipesaukee's defensive mistakes, as the team added two runs on a wild pitch and an error by the Muskrats catcher in the 6th inning.

A Chris Berry (University of North Florida) single in the bottom of the 8th provided Upper Valley with the insurance runs to protect their lead going to the 9th.

The Muskrats attempted to claw back in the final inning, as they managed to plate two runs on back-to-back hits, but it was the Nighthawks who prevailed, increasing their record to a league-best 5-1 with the victory.

Upper Valley starter Ryan Parker (University of West Georgia) put on a spectacular display, pitching five scoreless innings while surrendering only four hits and two walks. Parker fanned five Winnipesaukee batters. Wes Bucher (University of West Georgia) hurled the next three innings, giving up a pair of runs on three hits. Jordy Allard (Southern New Hampshire University) closed the door in 9th inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

The Nighthawks are back in action tomorrow, hosting the Sanford Mainers at 6:30 PM. Tomorrow is Strikeout Breast Cancer and Nurse's Appreciation Night. The Nighthawks will wear pink jerseys and be raising money to support breast cancer research. All nurses will be given free admission to the game! For those who cannot make it to the ballpark, pregame coverage is set to begin at 6:20 PM on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
