OMAHA, NE - Thursday, February 17 - JOE TRESEY, who served as the defensive backs coach for the United Football League's Omaha Nighthawks during the 2010 season, has been named the defensive coordinator at UCLA by Bruins head coach Rick Neuheisel.

Tresey's defensive backs posted six interceptions during the eight-game 2010 campaign, led by safety Clinton Hart's two. In addition, Nighthawks safety Stuart Schweigert ranked second in the UFL in total tackles by a defensive back with 45.

"Joe has had outstanding success at both Cincinnati and South Florida and I know he is going to be successful here at UCLA," Neuheisel said in a school press release. "He has an aggressive style that forces turnovers and negative-yardage plays and I feel our players, especially our youngsters, will benefit greatly from his style of play. He is a fine teacher and I can't wait for him to get started."

Tresey came to the UFL after a stint as the defensive coordinator at the University of South Florida. In 2008, as defensive coordinator at the University of Cincinnati, Tresey guided a unit that finished second in the Big East in scoring defense and rushing defense. In 2007, the Bearcats tied South Florida for the national lead in turnovers and interceptions. In 2006, Tresey was the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Central Michigan, and his defense forced 29 turnovers and recorded 31 sacks in 14 games.

Tresey's resume includes time as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Georgia Southern (2004-05), as the Eagles made the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs both seasons, and as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at the University of Akron (2002-03). He served the previous three years (1999- 2001) as defensive secondary coach at Virginia Military Institute, and began his college coaching career as the defensive coordinator at Otterbein in 1995.

Tresey began his coaching career more than 20 years ago as a well-respected high school coach in Ohio. He spent time at Middletown, New Philadelphia and Mechanicsburg High Schools before taking Fredericktown High School to Ohio's Division IV state semifinals in 1989. Tresey was voted the UPI Ohio Division IV Coach of the Year that season, and was inducted into the Fredericktown High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.

Tresey graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education, and followed that with a Masters of Education in Sports Science from Ashland University.
