
NIFL Announces Players of the Week
March 31, 2004 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL) News Release
LAFAYETTE, LAâThe National Indoor Football League is pleased to announce Players of the Week from Week 3 action around the league as follows:
Pacific Conference:
Matt Strand - Quarterback, Wyoming Cavalry
Pacific Conference Offensive Player of the Week
Quarterback Matt Strand had a breakout first game as the Wyoming Cavalry began the 2004 season with a big win on the road against Tri-City, 62-54. Strand completed 30 of 36 passes for 248 yards and six touchdowns. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Strand will help the Cavalry take their show on the road again this weekend as they face off against the Sioux Falls Storm on Saturday.
Travis Salter - Linebacker, Billings Outlaws
Pacific Conference Defensive Player of the Week
Billings linebacker Travis Salter played a key role on the Outlaws defensive corps this past weekend against the Utah Warriors. Salter recorded six total tackles, two fumble recoveries, and one sack in the 40-30 Outlaws win over the Warriors. Billings is now off to a great 2-0 start in the early NIFL season.
Chase Long - Kicker, Omaha Beef
Pacific Conference Special Teams Player of the Week
Omaha kicker Chase Long helped lead the Beef to a 66-32 victory over the Black Hills Red Dogs this past weekend. Long was 9 for 9 in extra point attempts and also completed a 21-yard field goal. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder was responsible for 12 total points when all was said and done against the Red Dogs. Omaha's record now stands at 2-0 on the season, and will host the Sioux City Bandits on Saturday in Nebraska.
Atlantic Conference:
Angel Estrada - Defensive Back, Ohio Valley Greyhounds
Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week
Defensive back Angel Estrada tuned out to be strong player in the Greyhounds offensive efforts against the Staten Island Xtreme this past week. Estrada was a key force, scoring four touchdowns, one on a 12-yard run and three through the air as he hauled in four passes for 57 yards. The Greyhounds, with the help of Estrada's efforts, went on to defeat Staten Island, 58-16.
Nate Green - Defensive Back, Lexington Horsemen
Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week
Horsemen defensive back Nate Green had an outstanding game with Lexington this past weekend as they defeated Fort Wayne, 49-21. Green was responsible for 8.5 total tackles and a key interception return for 45-yards that helped change the momentum of the game in the Horsemen's favor. Lexington now stands at 2-0 on the season.
Brad Zientara - Kicker, Evansville BlueCats
Atlantic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week
Evansville BlueCats kicker Brad Zientara played an important part in the 59-7 win over the Waco Marshals over the weekend. Zientara, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound native of Terre Haute, Indiana, was 6 for 7 in extra point attempts and also kicked a 42-yard field goal on the night. The BlueCats are now 1-1 in the early NIFL season.
