NHL Lockout Will Not Affect ECHL, Season Will Open October 22
September 15, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release
PRINCETON, N.J. â The ECHL has announced that despite the National Hockey
League lockout announced on Wednesday, the ECHL's playing season will not
be affected and will begin as scheduled on Friday, October 22, 2004.
The NHL lockout impacts only players who are members of the NHL Players
Association (NHLPA). Players in both the ECHL and the American Hockey
League are members of the Professional Hockey Players Association (PHPA)
and are not directly impacted by Wednesday's announcement by the NHL.
"While we all hope that the NHL labor situation is resolved as quickly as possible, it is important that ECHL fans know that our teams will be playing and we look forward to providing our 17th season of exciting ECHL action beginning October 22," said ECHL Commissioner Brian McKenna.
