Laredo Law News Release

LAREDO, Texas – The father of Laredo Law head coach Scot Maynard, NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Don Maynard, will be at the Laredo Law game this Friday night as the Law hosts the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings. Kids can buy a ticket and Dad gets in free. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Call the Law ticket office at (956)-726-GAME (4263) or log onto www.laredolaw.com.

Don Maynard, or ‘Country Don’ as he was known, was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 1987. He played from 1958-73 with 13 seasons coming in New York with the Jets and included a Super Bowl III victory. He was a teammate of Joe Namath and the duo formed one of the most dynamic passing-receiving combinations in history.

In the Jets Super Bowl III championship season, Maynard hauled in 57 passes for 1,297 yards and 10 TDs. Overall in his career he totaled 633 receptions (26th all-time), 11,834 yards receiving (12th all-time) and 88 receiving TDs (6th all-time). A four-time AFL All-Star, his 633 career catches for 11,834 yards were both pro records at the time.

The lanky receiver was not known for running precise patterns. In fact, many of his biggest gains came on improvised routes. He was named to the American Football League's all-time team as a wide receiver in 1969. His 15-year career began with the New York Giants in 1958 and concluded with a brief fling with the 1973 St. Louis Cardinals. The rest of his career was spent with the AFL's New York franchise, which was known as the Titans from 1960-62 and became the Jets in 1963.

Seven times Don Maynard was in the top ten in receptions in a season, nine times in the top ten in receiving yards in a season, and 10 times in the top ten in touchdown catches in a season. He had five seasons of 50 receptions and more than 1,000 yards receiving.

Maynard set a career high with 72 receptions in 1960. He had a career high 14 touchdown catches in 1965 with the Jets and a career high 1,434 receiving yards in 1967.

While with the New York Giants in 1958 he participated in the ‘Greatest Game Ever Played’, the 1958 NFL championship game between the Giants and Baltimore Colts at Yankee Stadium that was the first overtime game in league history. In fact Maynard was the first player in NFL history to touch the ball in overtime as he received the opening kickoff of sudden death in that game.

Maynard played his college football at Texas Western College (now UTEP) where he was a halfback on offense and safety on defense. He was a two-time All-Border Conference halfback and a track star as well.

He was one of 20 players who played in the old AFL for its entire 10-year existence.
