NEWPORT, R.I. - Outfielder Andrew Garner hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the twelfth inning as the Danbury Westerners defeated the Newport Gulls 7-6 at Rogers Park on Thursday, July 19.

Danbury improves to 17-15 overall this season, while the Gulls saw their two-game win streak snapped, falling to 24-8 overall this season. Newport remains four games ahead of the New Bedford Bay Sox for first place in the Eastern Division.

Reliever David Gibson picked up the win for Danbury, evening his record at 2-2 this season after pitching a scoreless top of the twelfth. Newport reliever Ryan Pennell, who gave up the game-winning home run to Garner, suffered his first loss of the season, falling to 1-1 overall.

Danbury jumped on Newport starter Adam Ravenelle in the first inning, taking the early lead on a two-run blast by shortstop Zach Shank. Newport took the lead back in the second inning on a three-run homer by second baseman Blake Butera, his first homer of the season. Butera finished the night 3-for-5 with four RBI and a pair of runs scored.

In a back and forth affair, Danbury added runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, while the Gulls added runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Newport trailed 6-5 until the ninth inning when first baseman Brett Winger walked with the bases loaded to bring home Butera with the tying run.

The Gulls had an opportunity to break the stalemate in the top of the 12th inning when third baseman Austin Slater led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch before moving to third when pinch hitter Steve Anderson singled. Shortstop Joel McKeithan and outfielder Rob Ort struck out before outfielder Charlie White popped out to end the inning.

Danbury used five relievers in the win, while Newport relievers Michael Johnson and David Schmidt combined to toss five scoreless innings. Pennell did not allow a base runner in an inning and a third before giving up the winning run.

Newport will be back in action, taking on the Sanford Mainers at Cardines Field on Friday, July 20. John Hochstatter (2-0, 4.26 ERA) will make his fourth start of the season for Newport. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
