Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, RI - The Newport Gulls dodged threatening thunderstorms and the offense racked up 15 runs on a season-high 20 hits to defeat the New Bedford Bay Sox 15-5 at Cardines Field on Monday, July 2.

Outfielder Kasey Coffman, catcher Jeff Melillo, and outfielder John Norwood all homered to headline the offensive explosion for Newport. Every player in the lineup recorded a hit and seven players produced multiple hits as Newport improved to 12-4 in the victory. New Bedford managed just five runs on 10 hits in the loss, falling to 13-8 overall this season, a game and a half back of the Gulls in the Eastern Division.

Coffman hit a three-run homer, his third of the season, to straightaway centerfield in the bottom of the second inning to give Newport a 3-0 lead over New Bedford. Coffman finished the night 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored and five RBI. Melillo belted a solo homerun, his second long ball of the season, in the third inning to give the Gulls a 4-1 lead. Melillo finished the night 2-for-6 with an RBI. Norwood hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth inning, to give Newport a 5-1 lead.

"They key is to see a lot of pitches, help all the other guys, get on base a lot, and set the table for players driving runs," said Coffman. "We're going to be a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs."

The Gulls tacked on ten additional runs in support of starter Jon Prosinski, who threw five innings of one-run ball to pick up his first win of the season. Prosinski allowed just one run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts in his second start of the summer.

Newport remains in first place in the Eastern Division as they advance to 12-4, while New Bedford falls to 13-8 in the season with the loss. Pitching in relief, Middletown native Frank Holbrook threw the remaining four innings, allowing four runs on six hits, with six strikeouts and a single walk, picking up his first save of the season.

New Bedford starter Donald Murray took the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits, with six strikeouts and a pair of walks over three and two thirds innings of work. Reliever Jonathan Massad lasted just one third of an inning before Samuel Dodge came in to pitch three innings of relief, allowing four runs on eight hits, with five strikeouts and a single walk. Closer Carl Anderson pitched the last inning, allowing four runs on four hits, with one strikeout and a pair of walks to finishing off the game.

The Gulls will be back in action at home tomorrow afternoon, July 3 as they face the Mystic Schooners in a double header.
