Lafayette Aviators News Release

Lafayette, IN - The Lafayette Aviators (16-11) got some revenge on the Danville Dans (18-7) on Sunday afternoon to the tune of 10-9 in extra innings. The Aviators gained a game back on Danville in the Prospect League's East Division and are now three games behind the first place Dans.

It was a long first inning at Loeb. Starting pitching for both sides struggled to find the strike zone. Between the two starting hurlers for Danville and Lafayette, there were five walks and one hit-by-pitch through the first inning. Danville was able to work three runs across in the top of the first half of Lafayette's Cohen Nies (Defiance). The Aviators responded in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own. Chris Monroe (Illinois Springfield) singled to bring in a run, followed by a Kollyn All (Butler) RBI groundout.

All tied the game in the third at 3-3 with another RBI groundout. Both of the Butler Bulldog's RBI's were groundball double plays that scored the runner from third.

After some accuracy issues in the first inning, Cohen Nies settled in on the mound for Lafayette and held the Dans to just one run over his last three and two-thirds innings of work. Nies finished his day on the hill going four and two-thirds and allowing two earned runs.

Down 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, the Aviators came storming back. With the bases loaded and no outs, Matt Mackey (Eastern Illinois) hit a ball a mile in the air to left field. The ball was hit so high that the wind had time to drift from left to center field, where Danville's Wes Toups had to dive at the last second to make the catch on the warning track. Trey Sweeney (Eastern Illinois) tagged and scored from third. Kollyn All stepped up with two Aviators on base and one out. Danville pulled their infield in on the grass, but All was able to ground a ball up the middle and into center. One RBI was credited to All, as Monroe came across home due to a Dans fielding error. After the fifth, the Aviators led 6-4.

Danville tied the game in the sixth at 6-6, but then Lafayette answered back in the seventh inning. Chris Monroe scored on a passed ball to give Lafayette a one-run lead. Already with three RBI to his name, Kollyn All grabbed one more when he scored Matt Mackey from third with a line drive single into center field. Matt Phipps followed shortly after with a double down the left field line that brought All in to score. Phipps' double gave Lafayette a 9-6 edge.

After a 30-minute lightening delay, Lafayette's Justin Foy (Western Illinois) had to re-warm up and try to finish out the ninth inning on the mound. The Dans

Lafayette takes on Danville again on Monday and Tuesday. The Dans were able to string a couple hits together and then a single from Walker McCleney and a triple from Ed Johnson brought in three runs to tie it at 9-9.

In the bottom of the 10th, newcomer Miles Simington (Purdue) smoked a double to the wall in straightaway center field. Sunday was Simington's first start with the Aviators. Right after Simington, another newcomer, Alex Dorethy (Western Illinois) lined a ball down the right field line to score Simington from second and walk it off for Lafayette. That was Dorethy's first at-bat of the season with the Aviators.

Lafayette takes on Danville again on Monday and Tuesday to round out the four-game series.
