Newark, NJ. The ABA Newark Express opened a three game home stand with back-to-back games this weekend against the talented Matrix from Montreal. True to form, the Express ran early and often taking a 3 point advantage after the first quarter and increasing their lead to 17 at halftime. The Express led by as many as 25 points in the 3rd before closing the quarter with a comfortable 21 point cushion. It seemed as though the Express were well on their way to their most impressive win of the season except for one minor detail: the Express failed to show up in the 4th quarter. They got confident, then they got sloppy. After solid team play in the first three periods, the Express started to turn the ball over and over and over; 23 turnovers in all. Montreal got to within 2 points late in the 4th but may have run out of gas down the stretch. Rob Thompson led a balanced scoring attack with 25; Thompson and Mufeed Thomas grabbed 11 rebounds each.

In the rematch, each team reversed roles in a game that produced 70 personal fouls and 36% shooting. In what can only be described as a poorly played game, the Express overcame a 19 point 3rd quarter deficit and hit just enough free throws to squeak out a 2 point win. Rob Thompson again led Newark with 15 points. Aswan Morris chipped in 14 including a big 3-pointer and clutch free throw to seal the victory.

The Strong Island Sound met the Express in Newark. The Express out hustled (13 steals), out muscled and out worked the Sound en route to their 3rd straight win in as many days to improve their record to 6-3. Aswan Morris and Marcus Toney-El each dropped 23 points on Long Island. Rob Thompson had another strong game with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The Express face the Sound this Saturday on Long Island before hosting the Boston Frenzy on Sunday, December 11th at 3pm. For more information, email info@newarkexpress.com, visit www.newarkexpress.com or www.abalive.com.
