Newark Acquires Pitcher Jorge Vasquez, INF Ernie Banks, Jr.

The Newark Bears have announced the additions of pitcher Jorge Vasquez and infielder Ernie Banks, Jr. to its 2013 Spring Training roster.

Vasquez (veteran) spent the 2012 season with Newark, and recorded a 2.18 ERA in 45.1 innings of work, while striking out 71 and walking only 15. He was signed by the Kansas City Royals in 1998 as an amateur free agent and played in Kansas City's minor league system until 2004. In 2004, Vasquez pitched in two games for the Royals before being traded to the Atlanta Braves organization prior to the 2005 season. He played in seven games for the Braves in 2005, and recorded a 3.00 ERA in nine innings of work. He spent the following two seasons playing affiliated ball before bouncing between the Mexican and Independent leagues from 2008-11.

Banks (LS-3) was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 44th round of the 2007 MLB June Amateur Draft. He played in Florida's minor league system until 2008 and joined the independent ranks in 2009. Banks is a career .305 hitter.

Vasquez, Banks and the 2013 Newark Bears will open up the season on Friday, May 17 at 7:05 p.m. at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
