New York wins over Louisville City FC

September 6, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Louisville City FC News Release

A back and forth affair at Red Bull Arena saw second place Louisville City FC (14-6-6, 48 points) fall on the road against third place New York Red Bulls II (12-6-8, 42 points) behind a strong second half from the hosts.

The scoring opened in the 19th minute when Matt Fondy and Niall McCabe combined to put the visitors ahead. Fondy played McCabe behind the Red Bulls backline and the Irishman took a calming touch and fired his shot far post past the New York keeper. The goal was McCabe's third of the season and all of his goals have come on the road.

The hosts would pull even seven minutes later when Manolo Sanchez fired home a close range shot off a cross from the right side of the box. The goal for Sanchez gave him a score in back to back matches for the Red Bulls.

City would pull ahead again shortly before halftime when Fondy bagged his 22nd goal of the season. The captain was played into the box by Aodhan Quinn's ball that put the striker 1v1 with the Red Bulls keeper. Fondy would calmly place the ball past the charging New York net minder to give Louisville City a 2-1 lead in the 40th minute, which would be the score entering halftime.

The second half was a tale of opportunities as Louisville City did not capitalize on theirs and New York grabbed two second half goals.

The hosts would draw even in the 70th minute off a free kick from substitute Dan Bedoya. The Red Bulls midfielder curled in a near post, top corner effort past a diving Scotty Goodwin to put the game back up for grabs.

The Red Bulls would take the lead late in the second half in the 85th minute when they capitalized off a free kick opportunity deep in their own half. Bolu Akinyode met the cross in the box and headed it home to give the hosts not just the lead but ultimately the three points.

Louisville City was not without their chances, but unfortunately could not take full advantage of them. Minutes before the Bedoya goal, McCabe stepped up to a free kick at the top of the box after a foul on Fondy. The City midfielder's attempt clanged off the crossbar and put City agonizingly close to a third goal.

City would have another chance in the 84th when Nate Polak's run was found down the middle, but his shot was pushed aside by the Red Bulls Keeper. Fondy's followup attempt on the rebound was blocked out for a corner that City was not able to convert.

Louisville City will return to action Saturday September 12th on the road at Charleston in another matchup with playoff implications, with Louisville needing just one more point to secure second place and a bye in the USL playoffs.
