Titans improve record to 5-5 with 14-10 victory over Rock at Air Canada Centre
Toronto, Can. - New York Titans assistant captain Ryan Boyle unleashed a 4-goal and 2-assist performance in the New York Titans' 14-10 victory over the Toronto Rock on Friday, March 14 at the Air Canada Centre.
The win puts the Titans back at the .500 level with a 5-5 record and 5th place in the East, .half a game out of the playoffs. Currently the Philadelphia Wings are the leaders in the East, followed by Buffalo, Minnesota and Toronto. In the National Lacrosse League, the top four teams of the East and West Divisions make the playoffs.
The Titans entered the match against the Rock on Friday firing on all cylinders, taking a quick 3-0 lead over the Rock with unassisted goals by defenseman John Orsen and transition player Jordan Hall. Forward Brendan Mundorf notched the third goal off an assist by Ryan Boyle 2:31 minutes in.
Josh Sanderson scored the first goal of the night for the Rock at 7:37, but Titans forward Jeff Ratcliffe answered back, maintaining the Titans' three goal lead.
Toronto and New York exchanged goals and the Titans ended the first quarter with a 4-3 lead.
Titans forward Ryan Boyle ripped a shot from the outside to score the first goal of the second quarter, but the Rock answered back less than a minute later. Both teams exchanged a goal, to bring the score to 6-5, with the Titans in a tenuous one goal lead.
At 5:13 into the quarter, Titans defenseman Pat Merrill was slapped with a five minute penalty for high sticking leaving the Titans shorthanded for much of the remainder of the half. But that didn't make a difference for Titans' All-Star Jarett Park, who stole the ball from the Rock, blasted past three Rock defenders and went coast to coast to score a goal.
Forward Pat Maddalena added another answered goal for the Titans and New York ended the first half with an 8-5 lead.
Jordan Hall scored the first goal of the second half, extending the Titans lead to 9-5. Ryan Benesch and Chris Driscoll notched two consecutive goals for the Rock.
Ryan Boyle scored two unanswered goals, first a diving goal towards the net and the second, a power play goal. Jordan Hall netted a goal for the Titans :20 later, to bring the Titans lead to 12-7.
The Rock scored the last two goals of the third quarter, chipping away at the Titans lead and bringing the score to 12-9.
Titans forward Jeff Ratcliffe hit the back of the net for the first goal of the fourth quarter and Ryan Benesch of the Rock answered back four minutes later.
Both teams experienced a scoring drought until 12:14 in regulation when defenseman John Orsen notched his second goal of the night, scoring on an open net after the Rock pulled their goalie. The goal was the last of the night and the Titans finished off the Rock 14-10.
Ryan Boyle was the game's leading scorer. Jordan Hall scored three goals and dished two assists. Josh Sanderson had three goals and three assists for the Rock.
Titans goalie Matt Vinc had 51 stops on the night.
The Titans next game is on Saturday, March 22 at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, NJ against the Philadelphia Wings at 7:30pm.
