New York City FC Midfielder Jesús Medina Voted Alcatel MLS Player of the Week

July 17, 2018 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

NEW YORK - New York City FC midfielder Jesús Medina was voted the Alcatel Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 20th week of the 2018 MLS season.

New York City FC defeated the Montreal Impact 3-0 at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, with Medina netting a goal and adding an assist to lift the club over the Impact. Medina scored another goal on Saturday night at Yankee Stadium when NYCFC defeated Columbus Crew SC 2-0, bringing the 21-year-old's season total to four goals and seven assists tallied. NYCFC sits in second place in the Eastern Conference with 40 points (12-4-4 overall record) and maintains an undefeated 10-0-1 home record.

Medina opened the scoring in the 60th minute when he made his way past two defenders and took a shot from outside the box into the center of the goal. Moments later, Medina assisted on Ronald Matarrita's 65th-minute goal with a lofty cross to push NYCFC's lead to 2-0.

The Paraguay National Team member continued his scoring ways on Saturday, giving NYCFC a late lead against Columbus. Medina capitalized on a Columbus defensive mistake when he received a ball in the box from teammate Jonathan Lewis and finished with a left-footed shot into the top right corner of the goal to put the team up 1-0 in the 80th minute.

New York City FC returns to action on Thursday, July 26 to face Orlando City SC at Orlando City Stadium (8 p.m. ET, ESPN / WatchESPN / ESPN Deportes / TSN 2).

The Alcatel MLS Player of the Week is chosen each week of the regular season by members of the North American Soccer Reporters.
