New York City FC II suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Red Bulls II on Wednesday night. A cagey contest saw few clear chances for either side. Red Bulls would take a second half lead through Roald Mitchell's penalty. Unfortunately City were not able to find an equalizer and had to settle for a defeat in the Hudson River Derby.

The World's Borough was the setting for a derby clash between New York City FC II and Red Bulls II.

The sides were familiar foes having met eleven days ago in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup - a clash that saw City emerge 4-2 winners on the night.

Head Coach Matt Pilkington made five changes to the team that stepped out in the U.S. Open Cup, with Alex Rando, Drew Baiera, Matthew Leong, Maximo Carrizo, and Jonathan Shore replacing Tomás Romero, Rio Hope-Gund, Christian McFarlane, Agustín Ojeda, and Malachi Jones.

Unsurprisngly both teams were eager to make a strong start to the contest meaning a fast paced match unfolded across the opening ten minutes.

City were keen to establish a rhythm in a possession while Red Bulls attempts to unsettle them with a choregraphed high press made for an exciting tactical battle.

In the 19th minute, the hosts carved out a great chance thanks to a fast breakaway that culminated with Jonathan Shore firing off a shot from the left hand side of the box that was well saved.

At the other end, a Red Bull attack saw the ball pulled back into the path of Roald Mitchell. The striker made contact with the ball but saw his shot trickle wide.

The second period brought one change for City as Jake Rozhansky departed the game in place of Jacob Arroyave in midfield.

In the 55th minute City created a half chance after a beautiful flowing move from right to left created an overload. Chris Tiao played in a low cross but it evaded his teammates and was eventually cleared.

The hosts continued to test the Red Bulls defensive resolve, and the next man to take a shot was Jonathan Jimenez on the hour mark.

He found space on the right side of the penalty area and after receiving a pass from Carrizo he fired of a shot that unfortunately landed straight at the goalkeeper.

Despite that mounting pressure Red Bulls were handed a huge opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty in the 66th minute.

Piero Elias was the man adjudged to have handled the ball - Mitchell stepping up and converting the spot kick.

The 74th minute brought further changes for City as Carrizo and Shore departed in place of Stevo Bednarsky and Ronald Arévalo.

City continued to push for an equalizer and in the 92nd minute they came agonizingly close after a header from Arévalo crashed against the post. The hosts were reduced to ten men deep into injury time after Piero Elias was shown a second yellow card.

That would be the final notable act of the contest and confirmed a narrow loss for City in the Hudson River Derby.
