Grand Rapids Hoops News Release
The Grand Rapids HOOPS opened up 2003 on the right note, as they snapped a four-game losing streak in defeating the Great Lakes Storm 109-95 at the Birch Run Expo Center. The HOOPS, who led throughout the game, took six of seven quarter points.
Jerald Honeycutt had one of his best offensive performances of the season, scoring ten of Grand Rapids' first twelve points, on his way to 33 points (13-24 FG, 4-7 3FG). He also corralled 11 boards, second only to teammate Kevin Simmons' game-high 16 rebounds. Alex Scales continued his strong play as he registered 19 points, while Immanual McElroy came off the bench to score a season-high 15 points.
The CBA's leading scorer, Corey Hightower, struggled throughout the first half for Great Lakes, where he was limited to only one point. The Flint native awoke in the second half, and finished up with a team-high 20 points and seven rebounds. Former HOOPS big man Antonio Smith also added 14 points and seven rebounds.
Grand Rapids (9-11) sped off to a 59-46 halftime lead behind 19 points by Honeycutt and the helping hand of Eric Murdock, who came off the bench for the third straight game to lead the HOOPS with seven of his 11 assists.
Great Lakes (8-13) recovered to take the third quarter 25-22, behind eight points by Hightower. While the Storm had cut the deficit to ten points entering the fourth quarter, Grand Rapids used a 13-4 run midway through the final frame to earn their first victory in three games between the teams.
Grand Rapids now returns home to face the Gary Steelheads, who are riding a seven-game winning streak, on Saturday night at the DeltaPlex. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST.
