New Orleans VooDoo News Release
The Arena Football League announced today the assignment of longtime AFL player and coach Derek Stingley as Head Coach of the New Orleans VooDoo, who return to play in March of 2011 after a two-year hiatus. AFL Commissioner Jerry Kurz stated, "Derek Stingley is a fine father, husband, and football coach. Every place he has been in Arena Football as a player or coach he has had tremendous success." Kurz continued, "Derek is a longtime part of the Arena Football family. New Orleans fans are fortunate to have him at the helm of the VooDoo."
Stingley was the af2 Coach of the Year in 2007 leading the South Georgia Wildcats to a 12-4 regular season record, the second straight year the Wildcats posted a 10+ win season. His record as a Head Coach is 37-25, a (.597) winning percentage, including playoffs.
Stingley starred as a Defensive Specialist in the AFL for eight seasons and was a member of the 1999 Albany Firebird ArenaBowl Championship team, earning All-AFL honors. He later signed with the New York Jets. He also played professional baseball in the Philadelphia Phillies organization for 3 years. Derek and his wife Natasha have four children: Nahjha age 19; Isis 18; Derek Jr. 9; and Sanaa 6.
Said Stingley about his new coaching job, "I'm honored to be the Head Coach of the New Orleans VooDoo. I appreciate the Newmans for giving me the opportunity to resurrect my AFL career along with the VooDoo." He continued, "We will work hard. We will find the players that will buy into my coaching philosophy, and that will give New Orleans something else to cheer about and to be proud of."
The 2011 AFL regular season will kick off the first weekend in March with a 19-game regular season schedule. The New Orleans VooDoo will play in the New Orleans Arena, a SMG managed facility directly across the street from the Louisiana Superdome. Season tickets for the VooDoo 9 regular season home games are on sale now by calling 1-888-277-5526. 2011 season ticket prices are frozen at VooDoo 2008 prices. And through October 15th people who purchase season tickets will receive the 9th regular season game ticket free.
