New Mexico United Bests San Antonio FC 2-0, Takes Sole Possession of Second Place
June 17, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
New Mexico United News Release
Albuquerque, NM - In their first meeting since 2020's first-round playoff matchup in the Lone Star State, New Mexico United and San Antonio FC locked horns at Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park on Wednesday night. Behind goals from captain Josh Suggs and Austin Yearwood, the hosts earned their third straight shutout, and a 2-0 win, and took sole possession of second place in the USL Championship's Mountain Division.
Despite the improved offensive effort compared to Saturday night's 0-0 draw with Austin Bold, it'll be the defensive effort that United Head Coach/Technical Director Troy Lesesne hangs his hat on this evening. With the shutout, United's goals against average has dropped to 0.63 on the year, the lowest it has ever been this late in the season. A back line consisting of Kalen Ryden, Yearwood and Rashid Tetteh, as well as substitutes Sam Hamilton and Justin Schmidt held steady against multiple chances from Marcus Epps and Justin Dhillon for San Antonio.
The offense came from back end of the formation for United. Suggs - playing in his 200th career regular season USL Championship match - got the scoring started in the 33rd minute, slotting home a lovely through ball from Andrew Tinari for a 1-0 lead.
Yearwood doubled the lead for United in the 52nd minute - receiving a pass from Juan Pablo Guzman at the right corner of the box and firing a laser to give United a 2-0 lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Tonight's attendance at Rio Grande Credit Union field was 6,260.
