New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-In a penalty filled game, the Sundogs beat the Scorpions 8-5 Saturday night. Arizona leads the best-of-seven games series 3-2.

Arizona came out of the gates fast with a goal on the game's first shift. Kyle Hood jumped on a rebound for his second goal of the series. The lead extended when Jason Visser deflected a power play goal in the net at the 8:11 mark.

The Scorpions gave their fans a reason to cheer when they got their power play chance. Konrad Reeder used some fancy stick work to cut the lead in half.

Dan Laperriere pushed Arizona lead back to two with a five-on-three power play goal. In the final minute of the opening period, Alex Leavitt wrist shot form the high slot, beating goalie Andrew Martin for a 4-1 Sundogs' lead.

The Scorpions appeared to have scored a goal when Mitch Stephens got around the defense and pushed the puck into the net at the 1:25 mark. A conference of the referees turned out to be the turning point of the game. Craig Macdonald was called for a major slashing call and a game misconduct, wiping out the Scorpions goal and rolling the clock back 15 seconds.

With the long power play under way the Sundogs went to work. Alex Leavitt scored at the 4:22 mark. Another major penalty was called against New Mexico, putting them down two men. Cory Urquhart and Steve Rymsha scored 14-seconds apart giving Arizona a 7-1 lead.

Kevin Harvey drew the Scorps even closer with his second goal of the series at the 5:45 mark of the third period. New Mexico drew within one when Ross McCain scored a power play goal.

On the next shift Arizona seemingly put the game out of reach. Rob Lehtinen grabbed his own rebound and scored the game's final goal.
