Augusta, GA - The GreenJackets (10-9) finished their home stand with a 5-2 win over the Greenville Drive (11-8) Monday night. Steven Calicutt pitched four scoreless innings in relief for the win and Thomas Neal was a triple away from the cycle and drove in three runs to lead the offense.
The GreenJackets broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning scoring three runs off the Drive starter Eammon Portice (1-2). With one out Francisco Peguero walked then stole second base. Brock Bond then followed with an RBI base hit for a 3-2 Augusta lead. Neal followed with a two-run homer to the opposite field, his fourth home run of the season.
Calicutt (1-1) allowed just two hits, one walk and four strikeouts for his first win of the season.
Daniel Otero pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the season.
The Drive took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first beginning with back-to-back doubles from Che-Hsuan Lin and Josh Reddick to begin the game. Anthony Rizzo then drove in Reddick with one out in the frame when he reached on a fielding error from Bond.
Augusta answered back in the bottom half of the first inning when Neal connected for an RBI double scoring Paguero then with one out Ramon Corona came through with an RBI sac fly to center plating Bond. Paguero led off the inning with a walk then Bond singled.
Portice worked 4.1 innings and allowed five runs on six hits, four walks and struck out four.
The GreenJackets have their first off day of the season on Tuesday then open a short three game road trip in Hickory against the Crawdads Wednesday night. Augusta will send right-hander Oliver Odle (1-1, 2.30) to the hill in the first game of the series. The Crawdads will counter with right-hander Dustin Molleken (1-1, 2.81). First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.
Game Notes:
Neal has hit safely in 11 straight games, matching the GreenJackets 2008 season high that Nick Noonan set.
Brock Bond has hit safely in nine straight games.
Brock Bond finished 2-for-3 and is batting .407 over the first 14 games of the season.
Augusta starter Orlando Yntema worked four innings and allowed two runs on five hits. The right-hander walked three and struck out two for the no-decision.
Augusta was 3-4 over the seven game home stand.
