April 2, 2004 - NBA G League (G League) News Release

SHABAZZ IS DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF YEAR: Charleston Lowgators center Karim Shabazz has been selected as the NBDL Defensive Player of the Year for the 2003-04 season. Shabazz leads the league in total blocked shots with 91 and is second in blocks per game with 2.2. The Providence ('02) product is fifth in the league in total rebounds (7.5), defensive rebounds (5.2) and offensive rebounds (2.3).

NBDL DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE YEAR
2004 Karim Shabazz Charleston Currently on NBDL Charleston roster
2003 Mikki Moore Roanoke Currently on NBA Jazz roster
2002 Jeff Myers Greenville Currently on NBDL Columbus roster

MARCH PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Columbus forward Sedric Webber has been named the NBDL Player of the Month for games in March. In 10 games he averaged 20.7 points and 4.4 rebounds. He scored 27 points or more four times during the month and has led the Riverdragons to wins in seven of the last 10 games.

FIERCEST COMPETITOR: In a very unscientific poll conducted by NBA TV correspondents (a.k.a. media relations contacts) former Huntsville and current Cavaliers guard Mateen Cleaves was named by the players as the fiercest competitor in the NBDL. Rolan Roberts of Charleston was a close second.

TOUGHEST PLAYER: In that same poll, with a plus or minus of about 5,000, guard Junie Sanders of Fayetteville was voted the toughest player in the NBDL with guard Tierre Brown of Charleston on his heels. Check out the "This Week in the NBDL" video on NBDL.com.

DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE: Fayetteville forward Bryan Lucas leads the league in double-doubles with 16. The NBDL record is held by Tang Hamilton, who recorded 18 last season.

SEEING DOUBLE: Roanoke post players Geoff and Kevin Owens are the only brothers currently playing on the same professional basketball team. Oddly enough, this marks the first time the Owens brothers have ever played on the same team. They went to different high schools and different colleges.

NBDL ON NBA TV: April 5 at 4 p.m. ET, Charleston at Fayetteville; April 6 at 6 p.m. "This Week in the NBDL", guests include Charleston G Tierre Brown, Asheville F Desmond Penigar and Huntsville F Rodney Bias.

LITTLE KNOWN NBDL FACT: NBDL Director of Basketball Operations Chris Alpert finished his career at Davidson College as the Wildcats career leader in assists.
