NBA Development League Family Tips off Annual NBA D-League Cares Week of Service

NEW YORK, Nov. 11, 2011 - The NBA Development League, its teams and players will tip off the 2011 NBA D-League Cares Week of Service on Nov. 14, and host a variety of hands-on service events through Nov. 23, in an effort to give back to youth, families and communities while increasing fan awareness about the importance of service.

Team events and activities taking place as part of the NBA D-League Cares Week of Service include:

The Austin Toros players and staff will help students and teachers from 33 central Texas schools unload food and coats that were collected as part of a student-led program to help local families in need that has engaged more than 18,450 area students.

The Bakersfield Jam family will join with the Standard School District to assemble Thanksgiving packages and distribute them to local families in need to help make their holiday special.

Canton Charge players will serve a hot meal to more than 200 men at the Refuge of Hope, an emergency shelter in downtown Canton, Ohio, and will also participate in an all-day food collection at the Akron/Canton Food Bank.

Iowa Energy players will spend a morning supporting the "Combat Hunger" food drive benefitting the Food Bank of Iowa by personally collecting donations from fans and community members. The team is also encouraging youth volunteerism by providing the local school that collects and donates the most food with tickets to an upcoming game and special in-arena recognition.

Los Angeles D-Fenders players will host a health and wellness clinic for 200 special needs students at Palms Middle School and will also join the El Segundo COED Youth Basketball League members for a special practice at the El Segundo Teen Center.

Sioux Falls Skyforce players will host a tip off event for YFORCE league members at the Sioux Falls Arena featuring an NBA D-League FIT Clinic and a fun-filled skills challenge. YFORCE is a youth league formed by the team in partnership with the YMCA.

The Springfield Armor family, including players, coaches and staff, will spend time with patients at Baystate Children's Hospital and then head to Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen where they will roll up their sleeves and serve residents a Thanksgiving meal.

Tulsa 66ers players and coaching staff will join the downtown Tulsa Salvation Army for a Thanksgiving celebration that will include decorating the cafeteria, serving up a hot Thanksgiving meal and spending time with area families.
