November 25, 2008 - NBA G League (G League) News Release
NEW YORK, NY, Nov. 25, 2008 - The NBA Development League, in conjunction with NBA D-League Cares, will celebrate the start of the 2008-09 season beginning on Friday, November 28 with a "Season of Cheering," a league-wide effort to cheer on fans and give back to D-League communities for their continued support. During the "Season of Cheering" (November 24 through December 31) more than 200 NBA D-League players and coaches will participate in over 150 charitable events and activities throughout the 16 team cities.
"NBA D-League players, coaches and staff have always been committed to being active members of their communities," said Dan Reed, President NBA D-League. "'Season of Cheering' is a great way to tip off the season and underscore our long-standing tradition of providing more than just world-class entertainment on the court by continuing to support our communities off the court as well."
Among the many events scheduled for the "Season of Cheering" are:
- The Los Angeles D-Fenders are teaming up with the Los Angeles Lakers to serve a Thanksgiving meal to 250 members of the Boys and Girls Club of Venice, CA. Daren Cooper, Joe Crawford, Brandon Heath and Dwayne Mitchell of the D-Fenders will join Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol, Chris Mihm and Sun Yue of the Lakers.
- The Austin Toros joined forces with local businesses to invite 700 Special Olympic athletes to attend a Toros home game as part of their School House Jam initiative. In addition to a ticket for the game, the athletes will also receive a free educational workbook that includes exercise tips, math games and word searches.
- Through their Christmas with the Ants program, the Fort Wayne Mad Ants will each be paired up with a child in need from the surrounding area whom they will take on a Christmas shopping spree.
- The Anaheim Arsenal will work with volunteers in Pasadena to help build a float that will be featured in the 120th annual Rose Parade on January 1.
- The Iowa Energy is partnering with its sponsor MidAmerican Energy's Warm for the Holidays Program to assist low income families with paying their heating bills in the winter. Warm for the Holidays is designed to raise awareness of the challenges many Iowans face with home heating bills during Iowa's cold winter months.
NBA D-League action tips off Friday, November 28 with six great matchups including returning Stampede players Lance Allred (former Cleveland Cavalier) and Coby Karl (former Los Angeles Laker) against the formidable Sioux Falls Skyforce featuring former NBA player Bobby Jones at 8:00 pm ET.
