SHORTHANDED SUNDAY: With first place on the line and hosting a red-hot Fort Worth team, the Florida Flame played without head coach Jeff Malone (bronchitis), as well as guards Bracey Wright (foot) and Andre Barrett (flu).

WOULD IT HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE to have Wright, Barrett and Malone? Maybe not. With Sunday's victory, the Flyers improved to 4-0 against the Flame this season.

THEY SAID IT: "It's a bad time of year to have this happen, but part of sport is getting through without injuries and illnesses. You just don't know when that's going to happen. Sometimes you go a whole season and you're fine. Sometimes it hits you in waves."...Florida assistant coach and director of basketball operations Terry Thimlar told the Naples News following Sunday's loss to Fort Worth.

MAVS ASSIGN POWELL: The Dallas Mavericks have assigned forward Josh Powell to Fort Worth, making him the 22nd player to be assigned to the D-League from 16 NBA teams. Including Powell, seven of the 22 are currently active in the D-League.

OTHER...ASSIGNMENT...NEWS: Julius Hodge was recalled to the Nuggets from Austin on Friday and then reassigned to the Toros on Saturday...the Mavericks recalled Rawle Marshall from the Fort Worth Flyers on Sunday.

A YEAR AGO TODAY: On this date last season the Roanoke Dazzle was in first place with a 23-11 record. Following GATORADE Call-Ups to league MVP Matt Carroll and All-D-League point guard Cory Alexander, the Dazzle went 3-11 the rest of the way and lost in the postseason semi-finals.
