Old Orchard Beach News Release
Lynn, Mass. - Despite out-hitting North Shore, 9-3, the Brockton Rox fell to the Navigators, 4-1, on Thursday night at Fraser Field in Futures Collegiate Baseball League action.
North Shore (15-7) stormed out to a four-run lead after just two innings; a lead the Navigators wouldn't relinquish. After Brad Elwood (Charlotte) scored on an error in the first, Alex Markakis (St. Joseph's ME) plated Corey Reid (Florida) with an RBI double to tack on a run in the second. Patrick Raley (Charlotte) followed with an RBI single that scored Tim Hendricks (Benedictine) and Elwood soon followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Markakis, making it, 4-0.
Luis Gonzalez (Concordia) finally got Brockton (9-11) on the board in the fourth with an RBI single that scored East Bridgewater's Greg Baggett (Bentley), but that would be all the offense the Rox could muster in the loss.
After surrendering four runs on two hits and four walks in the first two frames, Brockton held North Shore to just one base-runner through the final six innings. Craig LeJeune (George Washington) scattered one hit through three innings of work, while Kyle Capaldo (Fairfield) tossed three flawless innings to keep the Navs at bay heading into the eighth. Jonathan Rosenberger (Newberry) then followed with another perfect inning out of the bullpen in his first relief appearance of the season.
Bobby Dean (Rhode Island) earned his first win of the season (1-0), allowing just one run on five hits in six innings, while walking one and striking out one.
Joseph Katin (Keene State), Miles Landry (Baylor), and Josh Michalec (Baylor) each worked a scoreless inning of relief to hold the Rox off the scoreboard. Michalec struck out two in the ninth to pick up his fourth save of the year.
Gonzalez, Joe Gallub (Concordia), and Vito Perna (Southeastern Louisiana) each finished with a pair of hits for Brockton, while Hendricks, Markakis, and Raley finished with hits for North Shore.
Evan Brown (Newberry) was tagged with loss (0-2) for the Rox.
The Rox are off until Saturday night, when they host the Pittsfield Suns at 7:05 p.m. Meanwhile, the Navigators return to action Friday at Martha's Vineyard for a 5 p.m. showdown.
