SHANE TURNER RETURNS AS MANAGER; BOB STANLEY JOINS âGATORS AS PITCHING COACH
The Navigators and San Francisco Giants have announced that Shane Turner will be returning as field manager for the 2004 season. Joining him in the dugout will be pitching coach, Bob Stanley, who replaces Ross Grimsley on the staff. Grimsley has been reassigned as the pitching coach with Triple-A Fresno, the highest coaching position that he has held. The Navigators' hitting coach and trainer have yet to be named.
Bob "The Steamer" Stanley returns for his second season as a coach in the Giants' organization. He made his Giants' pitching coach debut last season with the Single-A Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic League. Not a stranger to the Eastern League, the Portland, Maine native was the Binghamton Mets' pitching coach in 1999, 2001 and 2002. Stanley began his coaching career in 1997 when he was hired by the New York Mets to coach Single-A Pittsfield.
For 13 seasons with the Red Sox, the two-time All-Star compiled an overall 115-97 record with 132 saves and a 3.64 ERA as both a starter and reliever. Stanley ranks first in Boston's history with game pitched (637), saves and relief victories (85). He is also the only member of the BoSox to compile 100 wins and 100 saves. In 2000, Stanley was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame.
